What Is Giclée?
Giclée is a digital printing process that allows the image to be printed on a
variety of fine arts substrates; watercolor paper, photographic paper, acetate
and canvas. In the giclée process the original image is scanned or digitally
photographed and a digital, four-color file is created. Adjustments can be made
to the digital file to match the original as needed. Upon approval of the
proof, the prints are made on a specialty ink jet printer that offers an
apparent resolution of 1800 dpi. The printer uses random sized dots to make the
print appear to be at a higher resolution although the actual resolution is 300
dpi. The inks and substrates have been developed to resist fading for at least
50-75 years.
Since the original work is captured into a digital file, prints may be made in
a variety of sizes and artists do not have to make the entire edition of prints
in one printing. Each image in the edition can be printed individually or as
needed. This flexibility allows the artist to print multiple sizes if desired
of a single original with a minimal start up cost.
Framing Details
All giclées are printed on Arches cold press watercolor paper with hand deckled
edges, 1/8” on top and sides and 5/8” on bottom edge. Prints are hand titled,
numbered (if applicable), signed and dated by the artist on the bottom border.
Each print is sold matted and is also available framed. Acid free, museum grade
conservation board rag mats and archival quality hinges are used. The prints
are mounted to the bottom mat using two archival quality hinges attached at the
top on the back of the print. The beveled outer mat is floated 3/16” above the
bottom mat with a reveal appropriate for the print size.
